FBI agents arrested last Nov. 3 an alleged botmaster. Jeanson Ancheta, a Filipino-American, is charged with two counts of conspiracy and various forms of computer intrusion and money laundering.
Ancheta is suspected of using a modified version of the “rxbot” Trojan Horse to take control of thousands of vulnerable computers. Pop-up generating malware are then covertly installed in the infected system, a scheme that eventually generated $60,000 in ill-gotten profits.
Ancheta is now held without bond, with his trial scheduled for Dec. 27. If convicted of all 17 charges, he faces up to 50 years of prison.
